Healing is a Process

Healing is not a final resting destination. Healing is a process. I have a routine that brings structure to my life. Developing healthy habits helps helps sustain me through the difficult times because you know there is a “home” where your mind body and soul needs to be at a given time. I will demonstrate what I mean to you by describing my routine, which took many months to put together. My healing process daily includes:
When I first wake up I try to listen to guided imagery meditations that I found on the app “Insight Timer” (I especially enjoy listening to the meditation “Star Energy Clearing And Healing Meditation” by Gemma Sandwell). I also am a believer in affirmations (for 21 days they say). I enjoy the affirmations by Lavendaire on Youtube (I often listen to her video “Positive Affirmations for Self Love, Self Esteem, Confidence”). I enjoy coffee in the morning after eating flavored oatmeal for breakfast (oatmeal is easy on the stomach). I take my medication once I have food in my belly (always use medication planner – so helpful). Whenever I am in my car I listen to a book from Audible (I recently enjoyed a book by Tara Brach called “Radical Acceptance”). Mid morning I hit the gym for routine 30 minutes elliptical and a few other lifting machines (I go to Planet Fitness, I enjoy this gym). I spend nurturing time with my husband midday. We do chores together, and it feels like we make a good team. I put on incense (DINIL brand from amazon is the best incense I have come across). I journal daily instead of leaning hard on others to listen to my complaints I write about them and in doing so feel better. When I buy a journal I choose a beautiful journal that speaks to who I am and my interests – I also use many different colored pens to write in my journal in creative ways. Every day I take time to read my spiritual literature, the Qur’an. Being a believer of Islam has provided me with so much peace. Prayer makes me feel active in influencing the world. I pray for the health of others and feel like I have done something to help them. Through the Qu’ran I find guidance, explanation about life and tribulations, and what comes after life. The belief of Allah being with me gives me so much strength through really difficult times. I do not feel alone when Allah is with me. Each day I also make a concerted effort to spend time with the kids (cuddling if possible!). All of us have a consistent bedtime of 9pm. Soothing lighting promoting calmness and peace flows in our home.
Kobe Bryant said “Rest at the end, not in the middle.”
This motto is so right. Except, in my life, there is no room for slowing down. My goal is to be the healthiest, and the most independent I can be. I am very aware of my mortality and this awareness influences how I lead my life because I know that every minute matters. Family comes first. I want to age with grace, and I do not want to be overly dependent on my children. My mother-in-law became very dependent on my family. This gravely negatively impacted the harmony in our home. I refuse to recreate this disaster when I am older by being overly dependent on my son and his family. For these reasons I try to prepare my body physically for the wear and tear of old age. For instance if I had a physical injury, if my body is healthy and in shape I will more likely heal and recover from that injury more quickly. Check your vitamin levels with bloodwork. Take your vitamins if this is recommended. Drink sufficient water so that you are in the best physical form you can be. My friend gets kidney stones when he doesn’t drink enough water.
As Benjamin Franklin wisely shared “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.”
What are you doing in your life today that is unhelpful? Drinking soda was a huge issue that I cut out. I managed to replace soda with seltzer water. Since this change I have lost 16lbs! Do not minimize the importance of healthy choices. Your mind, body, and soul will thank you for these changes – more energy, better sleep, better connections with those you love.
