Music

music, voice, soul

“I think music in itself is healing. It’s an explosive expression of humanity. It’s something we are all touched by. No matter what culture we’re from, everyone loves music.”

Billy Joel

Ever listen to a song that really moves you?

Sometimes you just want to listen to music that really connects with the way you feel at that moment. Whether we’re feeling happy, sad, blah, or kind of numb, there’s always a song we can connect with. Music can be a powerful healing tool. Sometimes we are feeling so stressed out, and there are so many thoughts going around and around in our mind, we give ourselves a headache. And quite frankly, we just wanna be left alone because sometimes when we try talking to people, especially those closest to us, they try to figure us out and “fix” us because they don’t want to see us hurting. Sometimes we just can’t deal with anyone in that moment.

Instead, we head to our place of solitude. We lock ourselves in a room and put on some headphones, or take a drive with the windows down, blaring music and singing our heart out ’cause there’s no one around to judge or tell us to quite down. Playing that one song over and over ’cause that’s how you feel right now and you say to yourself, ‘”This song is it! It’s me! This is who I feel I am, man!” Or, you listen to a song that inspires you to change, or makes you feel better and puts you in that uplifting mood. It makes you feel like you can take on the world in that moment. Nothing can get in your way!

Music can penetrate deep into our soul and move us in numerous ways. It has the ability to express anything and everything we think, feel and believe. It is vast and diverse, from all around the world, which isn’t surprising considering there are some archaeologists who believe they have found evidence that the creation of music began over 40,000 years ago. It can spark memories that bring us back to the past*, it can sooth us through the present, or inspire us to move forward into our future. It’s part of our human existence and always will be. That’s why we dedicated an entire page to music.

Our selections have affected us in one way or another, maybe they will have a positive impact on you. As always, let us know of any songs/music that moves you or have had an impact on you in the past. We love hearing new songs that reaches the soul where it counts.

*Music can bring you back to the past all right! Some songs, probably a lot of songs, can induce memories of using which makes them a trigger. This is especially true in early recovery. If certain songs cause you to fondly reminisce about your using, don’t listen to them! Maybe later on in your recovery you’ll be able to, maybe not. Just remember, a song isn’t worth throwing your recovery away. There’s plenty of other tunes out there to check out and enjoy.
